Tak Tak and trailor driving on Koh Prathong

Explore Koh Prathong on this unique form of transport, the Tak Tak Car

Koh Prathong’s golden beaches, clear turquoise waters, and unique ecology have been one of Khao Lak’s best kept secrets. It’s easy to see why the remote island in the Andaman Sea north of Khao Lak was made a national park in 2001.

Exploring the island reveals an exotic and unique ecosystem rich in wildlife including several rare species of flora and fauna only found on this particualr island.

Koh Prathong, literally means, ‘Golden Monk Island’ and may refer to the legend of a golden statue of a deity; perhaps the Buddha, having been found or enshrined here before disappearing at least a century ago.
There is truly something golden, precious, and timeless about this beautiful island. The west coast of Koh Prathong is fringed by golden, crowd-free, sandy beaches lapped by warm, clear waters where sea turtles still lay their eggs.

Donning a mask and snorkel or scuba diving gear will reveal young coral reefs rich with dozens of fish species, lobsters, delicate sea fans and other colourful life forms.

Paradise for Nature Lovers

The island is home to over 100 species of birds, including the extremely rare and prehistoric-looking Lesser Adjutant Stork.

Other animals on Koh Prathong include the Sambar Deer, Red Muntjak, Wild Boar, Sunda Pangolin, Leopard Cat and the endangered, nocturnal Fishing Cat.

An exotic array of ecological zones and life in such a small area makes Koh Prathong a “biodiversity hotspot.”

The few humans to be seen on Koh Prathong are centered at Ta Pae Yoi, a small settlement of Thais and Moken who live in traditional wooden homes on stilts over the water. This community fosters a local turtle nursery for threatened sea turtles and lives on here as they have for centuries as fishermen and boat-builders.

There are a few sleepy bungalow operations on the North-West coast, most of whom are orientated toward sustainable tourism and build with local, renewable materials.

Nestled between Koh Kho Khao to the south and the lush Koh Rah to the north, Koh Prathong is normally accessed by an 1.5 hour longtail boat ride from Khuraburi, which is 1.5 hours north of Khao Lak.

Now, Unseen Koh Prathong’s amazing day tour of the island starts at the pier in Ban Nam Khem just 20 minutes from Khao Lak.

Koh Prathong Tour from Khao Lak

Speedboat ride to Koh Prathong

The fast smooth cruise to Koh Prathong

The tour begins aboard sleek, modern speedboat, which smoothly carries you north in channels through the mangrove forest. Heading north, you pass only a few tiny fishing settlements while the lush, jungle-clad mountains of the mainland seem to rise steeply up from the mangroves on your right-hand side.

To the west, remote east side of Koh Koh Khao rounds to a channel to the open ocean westward. Then Koh Prathong’s wild, remote eastern mangroves and innumerable inlets begin to slide along your left hand side.

You start to get that nostalgic feeling of a time and place few people get to experience.

After cruising up the eastern side of Koh Prathong, you finally reach the sleepy fishing village of Ta Pae Yoi. On the pier, you get to see the turtles in the nursery up close and personal.

Explore the timeless fishing village and notice how some buildings are still constructed with bamboo, local wood, and tree bark.

From town, you board the only form of transport, the noisy but surprisingly smooth Tak Tak.

The Tak Tak Car

All terrain vehicle, the Tak Tak car from Koh Prathong

All terrain vehicle, the Tak Tak

This locally fabricated vehicle tales you on an incredible safari inland through four unique geographical zones: mangrove, marine jungle, savannah, and finally the coastal zone.

Your guide makes sure you get to see the unique flora and fauna in each zone including wild cashews and other fruits, Maleleuca (paper bark trees), rare orchids, and diverse animal and bird life.

By noon, the Tak Tak has brought you through the savannah zone into the western coastal forests and the beach. There are a few small bungalows here and you have a satisfying lunch at Prathong Place situated on a beautiful palm-fringed bay.

Enjoy the Quiet Tropical Beaches of Prathong

Enjoying the beach at Koh Prathong

Even in High Season the beaches are free of the crowds

After lunch is the time to relax, explore the beaches, swim and go snorkeling. Just off shore there are two uninhabited islands. These and the surrounding bays offer sandy beaches and coral reefs teeming with sea life. It’s a great way to experience Andaman marine life without having to go all the way out to the Similans.

After enjoying the warm, clear Andaman Sea for a few hours, the speedboat will be ready to take you on a relaxing cruise back down the coasts of Koh Prathong and Koh Kho Khao to the pier at Nam Khem.

If you choose, you may arrange to stay longer on the island…Unseen Koh Prathong will arrange overnight or longer stays right at Prathong Place as well as return transport.
