How to get to Khao Lak

Khao Lak on Thailand's Highway 4
No Coal Krabi banner advertising

Khao Lak is ideally located just one hour north of Phuket Island. For a beachside destination in southern Thailand it is by far one of the most easily accessible. There is no conflicting information like ‘many roads lead to Khao Lak’. Only one road leads to Khao Lak, Highway 4 which runs from Bangkok in central Thailand all the way to the Malay boarder in the south. The ease in which you can reach Khao Lak, as well as being the gateway to the famous Similan Islands, is adding to the small town’s popularity as a tourist destination.

With Phuket’s inadequate infrastructure and notorious taxi scams it is actually faster, safer and more convenient to head north to Khao Lak from Phuket International Airport than to the major resort towns in the south of Phuket. With current Phuket congestion it is over two hours to Patong from Phuket Airport. In half the time you can be relaxing with a cocktail at your beachside Khao Lak resort. All this sounds great right? So, exactly how do you get to Khao Lak?

How to Get to Khao Lak By Plane

Thai Airways and Bangkok Airways operate numerous daily domestic flights from Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi International Airport to Phuket Airport.

Nok Air and Air Asia operate numerous daily domestic flights from Bangkok’s Don Muang Domestic Airport to Phuket Airport.

There are also Air Asia flights from Chiang Mai to Phuket and Bangkok Airways flights from Koh Samui to Phuket.

The main highway to Khao Lak is only 5km from the airport. There is a bus stop at the airport junction. Buses to Khao Lak run every hour during the day and take approximately 90 minutes. The price is roughly 100 Baht depending on the type of bus, plus 100 Baht taxi fare to the bus stop. There are plenty of taxis at Phuket Airport that will take you to Khao Lak. The current price is 1,500 Baht for the 60 minute journey. Phuket has a bad reputation for taxi scams so be careful at the airport. The most preferred, convenient way is with a prearranged taxi from a reputable source. Contact us for more details.
