If you are a scuba diver visiting Khao Lak and have just found out that the Similan Islands are closed, don’t worry, we have been doing some research and have found some alternative Thailand diving options for you.

Khao Lak is ideally located on the Andaman coast for both land tours and diving trips out to sea. Situated between Phuket and Khao Sok, it is a great place to base yourself for visiting some of the best dive sites that Thailand has to offer.

The diving options available to you are quite varied; from diving in turquoise waters to the south of Phuket, to exploring emerald green waters in Khao Sok. Khao Lak Wired has given a brief overview of each type of diving trip you can take from Khao Lak during the low season.

One of our favourite places, Khao Sok National Park, is home to a beautiful huge lake right in the middle. This lake was made by a power company who flooded part of the region to create a power source.

The area is renowned for its beauty in Southern Thailand. It is made up of stunning karst stone cliffs and dense jungle, all fringing the interesting Khao Sok Lake. It is possible to do land tours here, but it is also possible to dive in the Lake.

Other diving options are south of Phuket, but easily reachable from Khao Lak.

There are some lovely dive sites down there and you will get the chance to see the dramatic scenery off of Phuket in the Andaman Sea and sometimes Phang Nga Bay.

You can visit on a number of different boats operated by different companies.

Phuket Diving Trips

If you are in Khao Lak you can enquire at IQ Dive, which is located on Khao Lak’s high street. IQ offer the standard day trips from Phuket.

If you are in Bang Niang you can enquire at Go2Similans, which is located on the beach road. Go2Similans also offer the standard day trips from Phuket.

08:00 – Pick up from Khao Lak Hotel	05:30 – Early rise for sunrise safari on the longtail boat
09:30 – Visit view point on the way to Khao Sok Lake	07:00 – Breakfast
11.00 – Get to lake, join longtail boat and travel out to 1st dive site	08:00 – Lake exploration, this may include trekking or a visit to coral cave
12:00 – Dive 1 in Khao Sok Lake	13:00 – Travel to raft house for lunch and free time
14:00 – Travel to raft house for lunch and free time	08:30 – Lake exploration. This may include trekking or a visit to coral cave
13:00 – Afternoon is spent at your leisure, you will have free time to relax, swim in the lake or kayak	12:00 – Lunch
18:00 – Dinner at the Raft House	14:00 – Dive 2
19:00 – Free time at the Raft House	15:30 – Get back to the pier

Depending on stops on the way back you should arrive at your hotel approximately 18.30.

17:00 – Snack and travel back to pier
18:00 – Arrive back to the pier and meet taxi

Please note, this is a sample itinerary. Day trips from Phuket will vary depending on which operator you choose, some offer 2 dive days while others will have 3 days per day. Many day trips from Phuket start at 07.00, in this instance pick up from Khao Lak will be at 05.00.
